Mrs. John H. Briggs
Mount Union, Sept. 1 - Catharine Elizabeth Briggs, widow of John H. Briggs, passed away Thursday, August 28, 1937, at 12:30 p.m. at the home of her sister Mrs. Annie M. Fields, with whom she had made her home following the death of her husband some years ago. She had been in failing health five years and had been confined to bed the past year or longer. She was tenderly cared for by her sister. Catharine Elizabeth (Youtzy) Briggs was the daughter of Michael and Catharine Lutz Youtzy. She was born in Mifflin county, Oct. 2, 1848 and if she had lived until Oct. 2nd, she would have been 89 years old. She was married to John H. Briggs, Nov. 19, 1872. They lived in Tyrone for 47 years. They came to Mount Union 9 years ago and Mr. Briggs passed away at the home of Mrs. Fields in 1930. Four children were born to the union but two survive. Mrs. Briggs was a Christian woman of sterling quality. She was a lifelong member of the Baptist church and at the time of death was a member of the Grace Baptist church of Tyrone. For her to live was Christ and to die was gain. Surviving are one son, Jesse J. Briggs of Washington, Pa., and one daughter, Eva, wife of Charles W. Hahn. There are 6 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Two sisters also survive. They are Mrs. Annie M. Fields of Mount Union and Mrs. Rebecca McKinney, of Pittsburgh. Private funeral services were held from the home of Mrs. Annie M. Fields, Sunday, August 29th. Rev. M.S. Sharp of the Lutheran church of Mount Union officiated and the body was taken to the family plot in Grandview cemetery at Tyrone and laid to rest in a grave beside that of her husband.
