Flowers left for Ralph Kiner
Ralph Kiner was a childhood friend of mine; although he didn't know it. I spent many a Met's game listening to him on the radio late at night with Lindsey or Bob Murphy or turning on the TV with the sound turned down so I wouldn't wake my parents. Here is my favorite story about the great Ralph Kiner!!! R.I.P. Ralph; Baseball Hero and War Hero!!!"In those days we didn't have hitting coaches. I was struggling. One September afternoon in 1969 (Sept. 15), I asked him to come and feed balls through the pitching machine. We talked for about an hour. He gave me tips on holding the bat. That night I had the greatest night of my career. I hit two home runs off Steve Carlton and we won, 4-3." (The two two-run homers accounted for all the Mets runs on the night Carlton struck out 19.)
