Flowers left for William Thayer
Thayer was a "principal musician" or drum major. He married Abbott's sister, Emily, and his thoughts were with her on Dec. 23, 1864, in Charleston, Tenn."Christmas is close at hand wonder where My Em. will spind the holidays as for my self I rather think I will spend my time on Christmas in the commissary," Thayer wrote."It was like tearing my heart strings to leave you and none can tell how much I miss you," Thayer added. "How often I have looked at your dear picture."The next day, Christmas Eve, Thayer waited to move with fellow soldiers."The train leaves at two o'clock for Chattanooga and this must be there ready for a start when any mail goes north," he wrote.Thayer survived the war and was reunited with Emily. They are buried, together, near Sioux City.
