Flowers left for William Wilson
How Bill Wilson ended up on his death bed begging for whiskey is truly a sad story for a man with so much promise. His own book "AS Bill Sees It" invites us to take his inventory. God is the real founder of AA, He just used Dr. Bob and Bill as the go-betweens. Instead of working the steps, Bill Wilson squandered his years of sobriety testing LSD and Vitamin B as substitutes for God, doing 13th steps with vulnerable young women, playing the big shot at AA meetings, and milking revenues from Big Book sales to buy his mistress a home in Ireland. On his death bed, Bill Wilson's life caught up with him, he finally came to his "turning point" and instead of seeking God with complete abandonment for His protection and care, Bill pleaded for alcohol. He never really became a new person and proved one of AA's most important lessons "half measures, avail us nothing" He may have helped many others, but in the end he failed to even qualify for membership in an organization he helped to created. Through self indulgence, Bill Wilson had never lost his desire to stop drinking. The complete Bill Wilson story is not being told in AA today. However it should be, because it serves as a warning to all those self proclaimed AA guru's who may quote the Big Book and sponsor others but never ever really recover from alcolohism. Many of them have become false teachers and stumbling blocks to others. They linger too long in recovery only to be eventually overwhelmed when like Bill Wilson their "turning point" comes upon them like a thief in the night. Bill Wilson may have helped write the Big Book and helped others, but all that wasn't enough to remove the terror he experienced during those last pitiful hours of his life.On the other hand, Dr Bob's story is a story of a man who found God, became a new man, recovered completely and presents the real success story of AA. AA can help people recover from Alcoholism if and only if they stay on the path. Bill and Bob are like the two thieves on the cross. One made it into the Kingdom and the other didn't.
