Flowers left for Andrew Johnson
Andrew Johnson: Sir, you will be rememberd as the 17th President of the United States (18651869). As Vice President of the United States in 1865, he succeeded Abraham Lincoln following the latter's assassination. You then presided over the initial and contentious Reconstruction era of the United States following the American Civil War. Your policies failed to promote the rights of the Freedmen, and came under vigorous political attack from Republicans, ending in his impeachment by the U.S. House of Representatives, though it failed in the U.S. Senate. Also you will be remembered as the only former president to serve in the Senate. In his first and last speech in the Senate, you spoke eloquently in opposition to Grant's military intervention between rival governments in Louisiana, espousing his typical devotion to the Constitution. You are remembered today, happy 204th birthday!
