Calfenus Surfus, of Co. K, enrolled Nov. 1, 1861 in Auburn by Capt. W. Park as a Private; mustered in Nov. 22, 1861 in Ft. Wayne by Lt. Stansbury at age 18. He was 5¡ä 5¡å tall, light complexion, blue eyes, and light hair. Born Apr. 8, 1844 in DeKalb Co., IN, employed as a laborer, single, resident of Auburn, in DeKalb Co., IN. Mustered out at the end of the war Sep. 14, 1865 in Nashville, TN with rank of Corporal. Notes: Actually 16 at muster in. Wounded in back and neck at Shiloh; fought at Chickamauga. Reenlisted Jan. 1, 1864. Appointed Corporal Feb. 1, 1865. Married Catharine E. Gray 1868 in Noble Co., IN. He filed Invalid Pension Application to receive Pension Certificate #549088 Apr. 30, 1890. Resident of Wolf Lake 1867¨C1889; of Cresco 1890¨C1893; of Ormas 1894 and 1898¨C1900; of Columbia City 1901¨C1920. Died May 10, 1921, in Noble Co., IN; buried Wolf Lake Cemetery, Sec. S, as Calphenous Surfus. Unnamed filed Widow¡¯s Pension Application to receive Widow¡¯s Pension Certificate #909673 Jun. 16, 1921.
