Flowers left for John Slocum
This brave solider was mortally wounded at the Battle of Bull Run. He was left behind as the Union Army fled in haste. He was cared for, but died of his wounds. Later his body was retrieved and taken back to his home state of Rhode Island. Along the way, his body laid in state at Independence Hall in Philadelphia for more than two days. Major Sullivan Ballou and Captain Lewis Towers, also from Rhode Island, laid in state with him. This was on March 27, 1862. The 150 anniversary of that honor is this week. A few years later, their President, Abraham Lincoln, also laid in state in Independence Hall after being assisnated in Washington, DC. The sacrificing never ends.
