Flowers left for Mary Lange
Servant of God Mother Mary Elizabeth Lange: Madam, you will be remembered as the foundress of the Oblate Sisters of Providence. Your congregation was the first congregation of women religious of African and Haitian descent. The congreation was to establish foundnation to help and support the education of black children. You would provide direction, solicit financial assistance and encourage other women of color to become members of the first order of African-American nuns in the history of the Catholic Church. The congregation's sisters gave their taltents to educated youths and provided homes for orphans. They nursed the sick and dying and sheltered the elderly. You will be remembered as a woman who was deep faith enabled her to persevere against all odds and a woman of vision and selfless commitment. I do hope someday your name will be on the list for sainthood and you are remembered on this day after 130 years, may you rest in peace!
