Flowers left for Ralph Emerson
Dear Mr Emerson: 120 years will soon have passed since that lovely April day when your true company of friends laid you away, dressed in a white robe, ending "the breathings of ambrosia." Seventy years ago my father was given a leather-bound volume of your works, and I grew up with its presence in our house.I know more of you than of my own grandparents, who were tillers of the soil. You planted the seeds of Mind, and cultivated and fertilized the crops of yours and future harvests. Knowledge is eternal. We can all walk up that white stone path to your door, and be drawn in to your study, seated across from your round table stacked with open books and papers, or stand before your hearth, arm upon the mantle, as Hawthorne did, and listen to your quiet words which signified an age of thought. Henry is there, and old Alcott with his daughter, and Margaret, and Elizabeth. And precious Lidian brings in coffee. You were a great soul with whom we can still join. We thank you, and that world you made.
