Flowers left for Hamilton Halyburton
In memory of Lt. Halyburton of the frigate HMS Assistnce, who together with the search party he led ashore in pursuit of post-Revolutionary War deserters, died of exposure in a Sandy Hook salt marsh. Originally interred in a common grave here, the memorial erected by his mother at this site was lost to deterioration. In 1908 the remains of Halyburton and his men were re-discovered and transferred to Cypress Hills Cemetery in Brooklyn, NY. The present memorial, a cenotaph, dates from 1939.
