Flowers left for Frankie Silver
I was reading the Ballad of Frankie Silver by Sharyn McCrumb and believed it to be a fictional story. One night I was describing the story to my dad. He turned to me and said, "That is a true story, my Daddy use to tell be about her." My granddaddy grew up on the Toe River in Yancey County, he had heard the folk tales of poor Frankie as a boy. Frankie shouldn't have died, but been able to live to take care of her Nancy. It was a great miscarriage of justice.
