|Dear great grandmother, Nancy Holland born in Maryland (prob. Talbot Co., MD) to James Holland and Unknown. Married Burwell Pitts 24 Aug 1797 in Chatham Co., NC. To this union 9 children were born. Nancy died in Hickory Co., MO.|
After the death of Burwell in 1855 Nancy lived with Thomas Pitts and family. A son in Thomas' family was born in 1857 and Nancy lived until 1876, he heard many tales of her early life in Maryland. She told him of seeing George Washington come through the town where they lived. Nancy (Holland) Pitts was a very short heavy set woman. The son said that his daughter Pearl was very much like her, five feet tall and three feet wide. He told of her carrying water from a spring at the foot of the hill below where son Thomas lived. She wore a wooden yoke and carried two buckets of water up the hill. He said she was 95 at the time. She had a colored woman who came to Missouri with them and lived with them and was buried in the cemetery with the rest of the family. We moved all the graves that we could find when they built the Pomme de Terre dam to the Pittsburg Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery in Hickory Co., MO.
