Flowers left for George Woodruff
According to hospital records from surgeons of the Second Corps, theGranite Schoolhouse was used as a headquarters by surgeons of the corpswhile the grounds around it were used as a temporary field hospital untilJuly 5 when the corps hospital was relocated to the Schwartz Farm on RockCreek. Lt. George A. Woodruff was taken to the schoolhouse after his injuryon July 3 and died there on July 4.The Granite Schoolhouse was closed sometime after the turn of the centuryand by the 1930's had fallen into disrepair. We're uncertain of the datewhen it was taken down but the foundation of the old schoolhouse stillremains on Granite Schoolhouse Lane. The schoolhouse site was cleared oftrees and brush several years ago but has since grown over making itdifficult to locate today yet it is on the north side of GraniteSchoolhouse Lane approximately one-quarter of a mile from the BaltimorePike.
