Flowers left for George Santayana
Well, in Italy, the custom is to leave chrysanthemums, which I bought outside the Cimitero Verano while I was last in Roma. However, and perhaps because my Italian is broken, if you ask the guards where Santayana's grave is, or where the Spanish citizenry is buried, you get shrugs and a cryptic map with many names except Santayana's (or even any remotely Spanish sounding names). In the end the flowers went in the trash, and I left as I came, confused amongst a beautiful scene, desperately seeking the elusive Santayana.
