SCOTT CITY Five people from Louisiana were killed when their van ran off Interstate 55 and landed on a creek embankment Sunday morning, authorities said. The victims were identified by the Missouri State Highway Patrol as Renique Brown, 24; Jakiya Brown, 1; and Trinique Brown, 3, all of Tallulah, La.; and Shalandra Booker, 31, and Lawrence Jackson, 25, both of Monroe, La. Two others in the van, including the driver, Sammy K. Hearn, 47, of West Monroe, La., and Calvin Hamilton, 21, of Monroe were air evacuated to a Cape Girardeau hospital with serious injuries, the patrol said. Their van traveled into the median between two bridges on I-55, became airborne and vaulted across Ramsey Creek, landing on its top on a creek embankment. Three of the victims were thrown from the van and a fourth was partially ejected, the patrol said. They were taken to Amick-Burnett Funeral Home in Scott City by Scott County Coroner Scott Amick. The accident occurred about 11:40 a.m. near Scott City, which is about 10 miles south of Cape Girardeau. Another fatal accident occurred on I-55 Saturday in New Madrid County, killing a Florida resident. The patrol reports at 1:15 p.m., one mile north of New Madrid, the accident occurred as northbound motorist David L. Martin, 57, of Port Charlotte, Fla., veered off the roadway and struck the southbound vehicle driven by Randall P. Slaughterback, 56, of Corydon, Ind. Martin was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:42 p.m. by New Madrid County Coroner Tim Clayton and was taken to Richards Funeral Home in New Madrid. 2004 All rights reserved.All other trademarks and Registered trademarks are property of their respective owners.
