STATE OF TEXAS ADJUTANT GENERAL'S DEPARTMENT AUSTIN 6 September 1956IN MEMORIAM. The Adjutant General announces with sorrow the death of Colonel SAMUEL F. REAVES, Infantry, Legislative Liaison Officer, Reserve Pool, Texas State Guard Reserve Corps, which occurred in the Methodist Hospital, Houston, Texas on 30 August 1956. Colonel Reaves was born in Wilmington, North Carolina, 3 July 1901, and came to reside in the State of Texas in the year 1949. He was a graduate of the New Mexico School of Mines. In civilian life he engaged in the newspaper occupation, being editor and publisher of the State Guardsman, the Texas State Guard official publication. He was a member of the Houston Press Club. He was a communicant of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church.Colonel Reaves was honorably separated from the service of the United States with the Rank of Captain, January 25, 1945, after having served in both the American Theater of Operations and the European Theater of Operations. He was also a veteran of World War I, having served from January 15, 1920 through September 10, 1921 with honor in the United States Navy. He was appointed Lieutenant colonel, Texas State Guard Corps, 26 September 1950 and assigned the corps Special Staff as Information and Education Officer. Promoted to Colonel, Texas State Guard Reserve Corps 10 October 1950, same assignment. Col. Reaves was reassigned Legislative Liaison Officer, Special Staff, 18 October 1955. The Military Forces of the Nation and State mourn the loss of a splendid soldier and citizen.
