James fought in the Union Army's 15th Illinois Volunteer Infantry in the Civil War. He enlisted on May 24th, 1861 and attained the rank of Private, fighting in the battles of Ft. Donelson and Ft. Henry along the Tennessee-Kentucky border before contracting typhoid fever and dying in Cairo, Illinois' post hospital on June 1, 1864.

He was the 7th of 11 children born to William Lloyd Monear and Martha (Christian) Monear.
