He enlisted March 13, 1863 at Monticello, Wayne County, KY. He was a member of Company F of 11th Kentucky Cavalry which was under the command of General John Hunt Morgan. Samuel Meeks was a member of Morgan's Raiders. He was captured July 20, 1863 at Cheshire, Ohio and received at Camp Chase, Ohio July 26, 1863 from Cincinnati, Ohio. On August 20, 1863 he was transferred to Camp Douglas, Illinois. He was paroled on March 2, 1865 and brought to the James River in Virginia for exchange March 12, 1865.
In several issues of the Richmond Climax, Richmond Kentucky, there are many references to his attending Confederate reunions and reiterating that he and his company served as the famous 'Morgan's Raiders.'
