Captain Edward "Eddie" Cobb, Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office, received his final promotion on Friday, February 22, 2008. He gave up his Sheriff's Office Captain's bars for service with his Lord in heaven. Eddie's life and family history was one of service to others. His thoughts were always on what he could do for you. All those who knew and loved him knew they only had to ask and he would be there for whatever task.
Eddie came from a long line of service to his country and others. His father, Senior Master Sergeant Edward Cobb's career was spent in the Military Police. In 1961, Eddie enlisted in the Army. He served in the US Army's 82nd Airborne Division as a paratrooper during the time of the conflict in the Dominican Republic. While there he saw active fighting and well remembered some of the battles. And like his father who was decorated with the Bronze Star for saving lives during an attack against Bien Hoa Air Base, Vietnam, Eddie also saved lives during battle.
Years later, while having lunch with his Sheriff's Office Chaplain, he was being told a story about one of those battles. Walter Dennis was telling of the time he was in battle in the Dominican Republic and they were literally down to their knees and fixed bayonets waiting for the return of enemy soldiers. And out of the mist and dust of the battle, they suddenly saw American soldiers coming toward them. Eddie stopped him for a moment and then surprisingly finished the story for him. Eddie ended the story by saying "I was one of the soldiers who came to rescue you".
This was typical of Eddie Cobb. During his twenty-five year career with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department he continued saving lives. He worked in many areas - patrol, vice, special task forces, and spent eighteen years as a Homicide Investigator and then served as a school resource officer. Upon many occasions during his years in Homicide, he would work alongside his brother, Jimmy, a Sergeant in the Crime Scene Search division. Eddie recruited his brother for service in the police department.
While serving a warrant on a murder suspect with Captain Wade Stroud, they were fired upon through a closed door. Eddie heard the action of the shotgun, realized what was coming and pushed his Captain away from the door. They both received gunshot wounds.
Even off-duty, Eddie was always taking care of others. While on a boat ride on Lake Wylie, he witnessed a man fall from his boat. When Eddie realized the man was unable to save himself, he immediately jumped in the water and was able to pull the man to safety. For this, he was awarded the Police Medal of Valor for heroic action above and beyond the call of duty. He additionally received the Police Community Relations Award, for Outstanding Service in May of 1990.
One of the joys of Eddie's life was running. He participated in and received medals from 25 marathons - each a full 26.2 miles. One of his favorite running buddies was his son, Alan.
After retiring from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, he went to work for the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office where he continued to serve. While qualifying for firearms at the firing range on Thursday, he suffered a brain aneurism from which there could be no recovery. This would have been as Eddie wanted things in his life to be - serving others until his last minute here with us.
