Frank was born on October 23, 1904, near Anthon, the son of Bert and Austa (Drake) Ashley. He married Sylvia Paulsen on February 2, 1925, in Sioux City. Born to be a farmer, Frank and his Sylvia farmed west of Anthon until moving to Char-Mac Assisted Living as charter members in 2000 when Frank retired at the age of 97. Frank's keen mind and creative energies meshed so well with the goals of Char-Mac that he was lovingly refered to by some as "Mr. Char-Mac." Sylvia died on May 3, 2001, at Char-Mac.
In his long lifetime, Frank served as Wolf Creek Township Township Clerk for 37 years and then director for Wolf Creek Township School #2 for 12 years. He was a 4-H leader, served on the Woodbury County Fair Board, the Woodbury County Extension Council, was a 50 year member of the Cerulean Lodge 550 in Anthon and the Consistory. He was a member of Farm Bureau and of Rock Branch United Methodist Church.
In retirement, Frank had a passion for reading, gardening, creating and inventing, but, most of all, he loved his yearly birthday parties surrounded by family and friends, music and laughter.
Frank and Sylvia's family was blessed with dearly loved children; a son, (Bert) Brian and his wife, Sheryl (Hamann) of Correctionville, Ia; and a daughter, Sonia and her husband, Paul Chasteen of Shiocton, Wi. Their 7 cherished grandchildren and spouses are Kami (Ashley) and Hal Farrington, Kendall Frank and Lisa (Young) Ashley, Anthony and Cara (Bahrke) Ashley, Marci and Chris Sojka, Andre' Chasteen)and Brad Colemen, Shelly (Chasteen) Anderson, Brandy (Chasteen)and Clindt Collins. Their 14 treasured great grandchildren are Ashley and Ally Farrington; Justin, Seth, Lauren and Hannah Ashley; Anteres, Arianna and Aziah Ashley; Brad and Sydney Kuske; Chase and Ian Anderson; and Treven Collins. Two sisters-in-law, Anna Reinbold of Sioux City, Ia and Eleen Ashley of Anthon, Ia, also survive Frank.
Those preceding Frank in death are his wife, Sylvia in 2001, an infant daughter, Janice Kay, his daughter, Sonia in 2004; an infant granddaughter, Jamie; a brother, Eldon, sisters Doris Huffine, Maxine Conrad, and Shirley Reinking and their spouses; as well as a sister-in-law, Alice Hathaway.
