Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a Sergeant in the US Army, Company C, 7th New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for action near Richmond, Virginia in October 1864. His citation reads "Gallantry while in command of his company during a reconnaissance toward Richmond."

He served as postmaster of Atkinson, New Hampshire, for 25 years.
