Secretary to your uncle, Governor George Clinton, U. S. Senator, Mayor of New York City, Governor of New York, Candidate for the Presidency for the Federalists in 1812, Builder of the Erie Canal, and recalled as the "Phoebus Apollo" in New York Politics of your day. You are one of the great colossus figures of our history who did not end up as President (although the change of Pennsylvania's electoral votes would have made you our fifth President). But you did not need it. Whenever we discuss the leadership of the City of New York in our nation's economy, it was your Erie Canal that did it. The bucket of water from the Mohawk Riverthat was dumped by you into the New York Harbor in 1825 to symbolize the completion of "Clinton's Ditch" and the unification of the state river's systems still exists at the New York Historical Society. That's fame Governor Clinton, that's fame.
