Henry Lee, R.S. (Light Horse Harry) born Jan. 29, 1756, died March 25, 1818, on Cumberland Island, Ga. Henry Lee was an honorable man. He served three terms as Governor of the state of Virginia. He advanced to the rank of Major at the end of the Revolutionary War and was Honorable Discharged on June 15, 1800. I will only speak of the last of his life as it effects the John Lee family. Henry Lee had taken sick and went to one of the Island's off the coast of Florida. His sickness did not improve, so he made up his mind to return home to die in the U.S.A. (Many great men paid dearly for the freedom that we enjoy today). On his way home he became very sick and he stopped at Cumberland Island Ga. He thought he might get some comfort from his friend, General Green. He then discovered the Gen. Green had died. Green's wife, up in years, also could not take care of him. Henry Lee then sent word to John Lee, R.S. for some help to take care of Henry Lee. John Lee then sent his daughter Elizabeth (Becky) Lee who was about seventeen or eighteen years old at the time (Elizabeth was known to be a strikingly beautiful young lady). Henry "Light Horse Harry" Lee had lost contact with his wife, and with his fortune gone, he figured his wife had divorced him. He then took Becky as his common-law wife, (exact date not known). She bore him a son, James Jackson Lee, born 1818. Henry Lee "Light Horse Harry" died Mar. 25, 1818. It is told that Henry Lee's son, Robert E. Lee, was somehow told of his half brother, James Jackson Lee, and so Robert E. Lee came to South Georgia to find this young man, and help him get an education. Robert E. Lee came in the early 1820's not knowing he was on the edge of the Okefenokee Swamp or perhaps even in the swamp. He was unable to locate the boy. (Becky always called her son James Jackson Lee "Little Harry"). ***written by Mr. Eugene Velie***
