I have read the Court-Martial Transcript from November through January 1862. You did NOT deserve what General Pope did to you. It is sad that President Lincoln cashiered you like that. Thank God you were exonerated by President Hayes. Only a day late and a dollar short.

Not to disrespect your service, General, but until the advent of U.S. Grant, the Army of the Potomac had few generals worthy to command.

Thank You for your Service to Our Country, Sir. Those who are students of history know that you were but a scapegoat for the failures of a poor commanding general. May You Now be in Sweet Peace...

You remain a brave and noble enemy who got a really raw deal from your own leaders; and THEN it remained for our great Joe Johnston to help clear you. R.I.P., Sir. You did your duty well...

General Porter--you were one of the U.S. Army's great commanders. At Beaver Dam Creek, Gaines' Mill, and Malvern Hill you and your men proved your worth against the best troops the rebs could field. And your refusal to attack Longstreet at Second Bull Run probably saved the Army and prevented a rout or worse. On top of this, you are to be commended for being one of the first proponents of aerial reconnaissance. You were a fine man and you got justice in the end. Rest in Peace, sir!

General Porter, everyone knows today what a fine, useful soldier you were.At the battle of Malvern Hill you tried to convince McClellan to counterattack after your artillery hadseriously decimated the Confederater forces of General Lee - but McClellan refused. Pity, you were right. At Second Manassas you were doing your best under an incompetent, pompous fool. He had the connections, and ruined you for nearly a generation in that questionable court martial. But you were finally restored to your rank (prior to being a Major General) and your pension. We know the truth, and respect your fight for your honor - which is now restored to you. Rest in peace.
