This bio is inaccurate in its omissions. After being relieved of command following the Peninsular Campaign, and General John Pope's failure that the Second Battle of Bull Run, General McClellan was restored to command the defenses of Washington on 02 September 1862. This position placed him in command of the Army of the Potomac for the pivotal Battle of Antietam, which was a tactical draw but a strategic victory for the Union. Although McClellan was not a stellar combat commander, he was a superb organizer and popular with his men.

General McClellan: For people who study the Civil War mostly would have to agree that you were a interesting General. If the war would have been won in 1862 and you more than likely would have attained the Presidency. happy 186th birthday!

The best general of the Union forces. Had your plan been carried out as you originally intended instead of being hampered by administration politics, the terrible war would have ended much sooner with much less loss of life.Your life however entailed much more than generalship.Rest in peace.

Hi, I am in the 5th grade and am doing a social studies project about you. It has been really fun learning about you. I think you were a great general, never giving up. I hope I can meet you one day.

You forged a superb weapon, General, but never used it to its full potential. Someone once said that to be a great soldier, you must love the army, but to be a great leader you must be willing to order the death of the thing you love. Certainly your humanity in that respect deserves honor. But we have learned long since that holding back in battle only ensures more will die before it's all over. You came to lead at a crucial time and played a crucial role, and though the final victory was not to be yours, you served your country to the best of your ability in its darkest hours. Thank you, and rest in peace.

RIP General, If Lincoln had given you what you requested you could have saved many lives by ending the war early - but it was not meant to be I guess. God bless you General, and your lovely wife Nelly.
