I am all for the Union and it's preservation but you found quite the formidable opponent in Ol' Stonewall. Not everyone is meant to command troops on the battlefield yet there is no shame in putting your talents to use elsewhere.

You were called, by your own people, "Commissary to the Confederacy", in honor of the three large caches of supplies you lost; for those much needed supplies, I thank you. Both sides had "political generals", and you were far from the worst. Most of ours were pathetic, though Forrest, Hampton, and Dick Taylor proved to be great leaders. For an interesting take on your service in LA, see "Kirby Smith's Confederacy" by Robert L. Kerby [1974] Corruption in Louisiana did not start with Hurricaine Katrina. Both sides were guilty. Sir, you did your duty to the limit of your ability, which is far more than can be said for some during all periods of our history. Rest Well, Sir.
