B-24L #44-49041 took off, as the lead bomber with Capt. Frank E. DeBottis as mission commander of a bomber group, from Lecce, Italy on a bombing mission over the Avisio Viaduct near Trento, Italy. The B-24 was hit by German ground anti-aircraft flak which sheared the tail section off causing them to crash. No parachutes were seen by other witnesses.

Dana was "Killed In Action" in this crash during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
