Deputy Ortiz, 35, a 15-year veteran of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (Lakewood Station) was assassinated by a gang member while on gang detail in Hawaiian Gardens.

A dedicated Deputy, Ortiz received Lakewood's Medal of Honor last year after fatally shooting a carjacker who drew a gun on him and his partner.

He was a resident of Diamond Bar, CA and also an Army veteran.

Deputy Ortiz had been married 3 weeks earlier to Chela and leaves behind 2 sons, Jacob, 6 and Jeremy, 16. Also survived by parents, Rosa and Luis Ortiz; sisters, Claudia Santa Ana and Sylvia Gonzalez; brothers, Miguel and Javier.

Sadly, on January 10, 2005 his brother-in-law Manuel A. Gonzalez, Jr., a Correctional Peace Officer was fatally stabbed by an inmate at the California Institution for Men, Chino.
