Funeral Set For Aviator.
Funeral services for Lieutenant Ralph J. Atkinson, Jr., who was killed last Wednesday when the pursuit plane he was piloting crashed near the army base at Salinas, Cal., will be conducted at 1 P. M. Monday at the Holman and Lutz Chapel. Interment will be in Lincoln Memorial Park with military services.
Lieutenant Atkinson was on a routine flight when his plane developed motor trouble. To avoid crashing into buildings in Salinas and endangering lives of citizens, he swerved his plane sharply and crashed onto a field. Had he continued on a straight course he might have saved his own life, the commandant at the field reported, adding that Lieutenant Atkinson had died a hero's death.
Father on Force
The flier was the son of Police Patrolman and Mrs. Ralph Atkinson, Sr., 2030 N. E. 58th Avenue. He was a graduate of Rose City grammar school and Benson high school.
He served five years in the Oregon national guard and his term of enlistment ended on November 28, 1941. He also had been a Portland city fireman. In November of 1942, he entered the army air corps and received training at Santa Ana field in California. On October 1, 1943, he was commissioned at Williams Field, Arizona.
Surviving are his widow, Wauneta; his parents; two sisters, Marie E. and Gladys I. Atkinson, and an aunt, Miss Gladys Atkinson, all of Portland.
