Henry David Jones was born Nov. 14, 1916, in Daykin, Neb., to Ernest and Lena Fisbeck Jones. He died Aug. 28, 2007, at the Omaha VA Hospital in Omaha at the age of 90 years, 9 months and 14 days.
He was baptized on Dec. 10, 1916, at Immanuel Lutheran Church near Daykin by the Rev. August Kollman. He attended rural public school near Daykin through the eighth grade.
On Nov. 27, 1941, he was united in marriage to Evelyn Shoup at Grace Lutheran Church in Fairbury. To this union four children were born. In his early years he farmed. After his return from the service he worked as a laborer.
He was inducted into the 47th Infantry of the United States Army on Dec. 7, 1942, at Fort Crook, Neb. From there he was sent to England, then to France as an automatic rifleman. There he sustained a head injury from machine gun fire. He arrived back in the states on Oct. 1, 1944. He spent the remainder of his time recovering from his injuries at Chickasha, Okla. He received his honorable discharge on June 2, 1945. He was awarded the Purple Heart, ETO Ribbon, Good Conduct Ribbon, Combat Infantryman Badge and Distinguished Unit Badge.
He was a member of the VFW Post No. 3113, American Legion Post No. 24, Elks Lodge No. 1203 and the Disabled American Veterans Post No. 26.
His hobbies included fishing, playing cards, Bingo, dancing and visiting with people.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; brothers, August and Art; Sisters, Tillie Fishell, Lydia Wilson and Min Miller.
Survivors include his daughter, Estaletta Jones of Fairbury; sons, Charles and his wife Joyce, Gary and special friend, Jill Ehrett, Allen and his wife Letha, all of Fairbury. Granddaughters, Pamela Vanderloo and her husband Tim of Omaha, Michelle Jones of Hays, Kan., Tina Carstensen and husband Dan of Lincoln; great-grandchildren, Alec and Natalie Vanderloo of Omaha and Kadan Carstensen of Lincoln; sister, Ina Mae Drew of Eugene, Ore.; and nieces and nephews.
Services were Sept. 1, at Gerdes-Meyer Funeral Home Chapel with lay pastor Lana Likens officiating. Burial was in the Rose Creek Cemetery, Reynolds with military rites.
