Nitro was a six-year member of the Vancouver, BC Police Department. He was a true four legged hero with a passion for police work.
Nitro and his partner worked the tough side of town. Nitro and his superior nose were credited with tracking and finding many rapists and thieves. His shield was no. 9755. His specialty was taking down car thieves. By all reports, Nitro was totally fearless and excellent at his job.
Nitro was trained in the standard K-9 method of stopping predators by grabbing them by the forearm and knocking them down. Nitro could not see the sense in all of this running and jumping too. Nitro used his street smarts to develop his very own unique and highly effective method of chomping down on the fleeing suspects' ankle and just holding on until the villain quit.
Nitro's lifelong partner, both on the job and at home, was Constable Howard Rutter and his family. It is a little known fact that K-9 officers live with their partners.
Nitro was due to retire from the force in June of 2006.
Nitro died while in hot pursuit of a stolen car. A train at a grade crossing blocked the stolen automobile. The thieves bailed out and hopped on a boxcar, hoping to escape. Nitro tried his usual ankle chomp method, when suddenly the train started to move. Nitro fell under the boxcar, was struck by the train and died.
Nitro's funeral was held on February 6, 2006. In attendance were more than 700 mourners who either knew Nitro, or were K-9 police officers from around Canada and The United States. Holding with Vancouver Police tradition, Nitro's ashes were scattered at the city border.
In addition to Constable Rutter and his family, Nitro left behind his good pals on the Vancouver Police Department and the gratitude of the citizens of Vancouver.
