Cause of death: Hostile small arms fire
Dave's multi-purpose canine, Flex, was also killed in the attack while the dog was attempting to save Sonka. Also killed in the "insider attack" by an Afghan soldier was Sgt Eric D Christian, 39, of Warwick, New York.
The remains were returned to US soil on 7 May 2013.
A candlelight memorial service was held on 12 May 2013 at Chaparral High School where Dave was involved in wrestling and cross-country prior to his graduation in 2008.
