He was either born in 1617 in England or 1635 in Concord, MA. If he was born in 1617, he was the 18 yr. old Thomas Brooks who came over on the "SUSAN & ELLEN" in 1635 with his brother, Richard Brooks who settled in Lynn, Mass. As once thought, he does not appear to be the son of Capt. Thomas & Grace (Wheeler) Brooks, since he was not included in the final settlement of Capt. Thomas Brooks' estate dated June 17, 1667 (he died over a year later). His parents are unknown at this time.
Thomas was a blacksmith and by 1659, he owned a house in New London, Conn.
Whittemore's "Genealogical Guide to the Early Settlers of America", p. 62 states that his first wife's name was Lucy. By 1661, he was living in Haddam and was an original proprietor of that community. He married second, ALICE SPENCER, daughter of JARED SPENCER, about 1662 in Haddam. After his death in 1668, she married Thomas Shailer (Shayler/Shaler).
The inventory of his estate taken on October 18, 1668 by Simon Smith & George Gates amounted to œ109-09-00. Court records for April 11, 1670 show that administration was granted to the current husband of the widow (Thomas Shaler). The widow received "œ32 and 1-3 of the profits of the Land during life, she maintaining & bringing up the Children & teaching the daughters to read and sew and the son to read and write; to the son œ22, to the three daughters to each of them œ14".
