General Lawton, I salute you for your nearly forty years of service in the Army. Your career began at the start of the Civil War with your enlistment in the volunteer service. By the end of the war, you had risen to Lieutenant Colonel of Volunteers, and Brevet Colonel after fighting at Shiloh, Stones River and other battles. You were appointed Second Lieutenant in the Regular Army in 1866, and spent many more years serving on the frontier, advancing to Captain in 1879 By the time of the Spanish American War, you had advanced in rank to Colonel in the Adjutant General's Department and ably commanded troops in the field in Cuba and the Phillippines as a Brigadier and later Major General of Volunteers. On the day you were killed in action while leading your troops in combat, your promotion to Brigadier General in the Regular Army was being processed. I am truly sorry that you did not live to receive your promotion. Had you survived, you might have become one of the Army's most prominent leaders of the early 20th Century Regular Army. I salute you for your devotion to duty and your soldiers. You richly deserved the Medal of Honor you received in 1893 for the battlefield gallantry you exhibited as a young union army officer during the war of the rebellion. Rest easy, General Lawton.
