Sgt. Joshua R. Ashley, 23, of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., died July 19 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to 2nd Law Enforcement Battalion, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C. Promoted to the rank of Sergeant.
Joshua was born to Tammie and Jon Ashley. Growing up, Joshua graduated from Etiwanda High School in 2007. He enlisted in the USMC in 2008 and completed boot camp at MCRD-San Diego on October 3rd, 2008. He was a Military Policeman/Military Working Dog Handler. Joshua was stationed overseas for two years in Okinawa, Japan before arriving at Camp Lejune in 2011. Shortly after arriving at Camp Lejune, Josh was assigned his Military Working Dog, Sirius. In May 2012, Joshua and MWD Sirius deployed to Afghanistan with the II MEF, 2nd Law Enforcement Battalion.
Joshua is preceded in death by his Nana, Marlene Newport, his Papa, Douglas Newport, and his Uncle Tony, Anthony Giordano Jr.
Joshua is survived by his mother, father and brothers as well as his dogs Sirius and Jakob. Additional family members include his three Uncles.
Funeral Services will be held at Hillside Community Church in Rancho Cucamonga, on Thursday, August 2, 2012 at 11:00 AM. Graveside services and internment to follow at Bellevue Cemetery, Ontario, CA.

On July 19, 2012, Sergeant Joshua Ryan Ashley of the United States Marine Corps. was Killed in Action during combat operations while participating in Operation Enduring Freedom.
Joshua was born on May 27, 1989 in Upland, CA to Jon and Tammie Ashley. Growing up, Joshua lived in both Fontana and Rancho Cucamonga and graduated from Etiwanda High School in 2007. During his years at Etiwanda High, Joshua was a letterman in Water Polo and Swimming and also played for the school's Roller Hockey Team.

Joshua earned a Purple Heart, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (with 2 Bronze Stars), Global War on Terrorism Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation, Afghanistan Campaign (with Bronze Star), NATO ISAF Afghanistan Medal, Pistol Expert Badge and Rifle Expert Badge. In 2010, Joshua was selected as Marine of the Quarter and subsequently Marine of the Year for Marine Corps Base Okinawa.
