Born to sing, Richard Reynolds Spain made his "first appearance" in Fargo, North Dakota in 1913, later being raised and attending school in Aberdeen, South Dakota. His father was a traveling insurance salesman (also named Richard Reynolds Spain) and his mother was Mabel Crabbe who was born in Naperville, IL. His mother's lineage could be traced back to both William Brewster and Thomas Rogers who were Pilgrims/Separatists seeking religious freedom in the New World, arriving at Plymouth Rock on the Mayflower in 1620. Richard was smothered in love by his mother and her two sisters, Nellie and Grace, as well as his grandmother Lillian (Lent) Crabbe Morse. He attended Central High School in Aberdeen, SD,, graduating (and becoming an Eagle Scout) at the age of 16. His mother divorced, then re-married; her 2nd husband was a farmer named Vern Vine and Richard soon changed his last name to Vine. He pitched hay and worked on the farm near Porter, MN, but dreamed of singing and moving to California. One day, in the early 1930's, he put down the pitchfork, bought a used Harley-Davidson, and took off down the dusty Dakota roads to find his fortune and future in sunny California. Times were tough. When he arrived in California, he remembers being so hungry that he bought a bag of oranges for a dime and sat on the side of a curb consuming the entire bag. He eventually found work at Lockheed, Burbank changing light bulbs and performing other handyman tasks, and later writing tech manuals, all the while keeping his singing dream alive and playing tennis at Griffith Park. He met Virginia Kefes at the courts, and eventually married her in 1941. They had two children, a son (1944) and a daughter (1947); they moved to a little house in the San Fernando Valley in 1946. In 1947, Richard quit his job at Lockheed and signed up for a show. He eventually was signed for several shows in New York, including "Three Wishes for Jamie" which didn't have a long run, and "Kismet" that did have a long run and was a major success starring Alfred Drake. Richard's wife and children came to New York City in 1954, but the marriage soon ended and in 1955 Richard returned to California. His wife and children stayed in New York. In July, 1956 Richard married JoAnn O'Connell who was also a singer (and had also appeared in the Broadway hit, "Kismet"). They had two sons in 1958 and 1959; sadly the first baby boy died a few weeks after birth. Richard went back to work at Lockheed in Burbank, CA and later transferred to Lockheed, Sunnyvale, CA in 1962, living in the little town of Campbell, CA for the rest of his life . After retirement from Lockheed, he worked at a tennis clinic and handled subscriptions for a well-known mathematics journal. He dealt with prostate cancer for several years, passing away at the age of 85 in 1999 with his wife of 42 years by his side. He is remembered by all those who knew him as charming, funny, upbeat, handsome and the life of the party. For years he and his wife JoAnn would entertain visitors with duets like "No Two People Have Ever Been So in Love" and "I Remember it Well"; JoAnn would play the piano and Richard would sing, and emote, often with large doses of humor. Their favorite travel destination was Lake Tahoe, CA/NV which they frequented several times every year. Grandchildren include Morgan Vine; Jennifer Vine; and Aaron Vine. His legacy also includes four great grandchildren, Tanner Vine, Taylor Vine, Brody Brunner, Avery Marie Brunner, and Avah Vine. And, as of March 2018, a great great grandchild, Nicholas Dobrich, born to your great grand daughter Taylor.
