Thomas Woodrow "Tom" Marshall, 65, of Marshall, died Saturday, Sept. 3, 2005, near Marshall as the result of an automobile accident.
He was born Jan. 30, 1940, in Marshall, a son of the late Woodrow Wilson and Maud Holmes Marshall Knutz, who survives of Marshall. On Aug. 23, 1969, he was married to Mary Susan Miller, who survives of the home.
Mr. Marshall was raised in Marshall and lived most of his life there. He was a 1958 graduate of Marshall High School and attended the University of Missouri-Rolla, Missouri Valley College and Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg, where he earned a bachelor of science degree in Speech and Public Relations in 1969, and teaching certification in 1972. He taught in Cole Camp, Slater and Sweet Springs and was an adjunct professor at Missouri Valley College.
Mr. Marshall served in the Navy from 1961 to 1965 and was a member of American Legion Post 191 in Marshall. He was elected as state representative for the 26th District in the Missouri House of Representatives in 1984 and served six consecutive terms. He served on the Marshall City Council from 1976 to 1983 and was elected mayor pro tem in 1983. He was again elected to the City Council after serving as state representative.
He was a member of the Saline County Democratic Club, the Lafayette County Democratic Club, the Jefferson Womens Democratic Club, the Marshall Writer's Guild, the Marshall Band Booster Club, the Marshall Owls Booster Club and was currently president pro tem of the Missouri Silver Haired Legislature. He served on the boards of the Marshall Senior Center and District III Area Agency on Aging. He was an avid S-gauge model train collector.
Also surviving are two daughters, Katie Schisler, and her husband, Steve, of Bowling Green, and Meg Marshall, of Sedalia; a son, Richard Marshall, of the home; a sister, Norvalee Kolar, of Wichita, Kan.; two aunts; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church in Marshall, with the Rev. Vernon Maxted and the Rev. Wayne Doolin officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Ridge Park Cemetery.
