Deck hand on the Edmund Fitzgerald. Bruce Lee Hudson was born September 10, 1953 in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. He was very active in his community and very well liked by all. In his younger years he was involved in the scouts. Bruce actively attended the North Olmsted United Methodist Church in his home town. In school he was active in the band where he played trombone. He also had a band with several friends where he played drums and guitar. They would be found playing in the basement of his parents' home or out in the garage in warmer months. The kids in the neighborhood would all gather around outside to listen to them play. North Olmsted High gives an annual student grant in Bruce's name to a student who continues on the same path as Bruce with a passion for music, though it is said the student may apply it to any course in college they chose to study. Prior to working on The Edmund Fitzgerald, Bruce had worked on the Ashland as an oiler. He did such good work he was promoted to the lead ship in the fleet where he worked as a deck hand. While working aboard the Edmund Fitzgerald he was able to buy himself a few luxuries. He owned a bronze Dodge Challenger and also owned a motorcycle. Bruce had made plans to return to Ohio State University in January, 1976 to continue his studies in communications and journalism after a short break from studies. To this day Bruce is still loved and missed by many. He will always be remembered and celebrated.
