Fred "Burt" Kern was the son of Joseph and Rebecca Jane (Foss) Kern. He was born on Peats Creek, Washington/Clay County, Kansas 20 Feb. 1872. He traveled across the prairie in a covered wagon from Kansas to Colorado with his parents and four brothers; Charles, Guy, Walter and Harry. His father had a hardware store in Sterling Colorado.

As an adult, he and his brother ran a hardware/bike store first in Laramie Wyo, Colorado and later in Anaheim California. Later in his life he and his brother, Walter, ran mining/hiking and hunting expeditions in the California mountains.

He was married to Anna May "Polly" Cook in Laramie Wyoming in 1889 (later divorced). They had a daughter, Vera, who died as a child and is buried in Laramie. His other daughter, Faye Alice (Mrs. Hugo V Shulz) taught drama at Anaheim High School. She lived near where her father and grandfathers along with her uncle had citrus orchards and where later, Roy and Walt Disney realized their dream of a family amusement park.

Fred B Kern was often heard introducing himself as FB Kern of the Kern Cycle factory.
