Cornelius Beverly Abernathy was born 23 May 1839 in Giles County, Tennessee to William David Abernathy and Mary Beckwith Hardaway. He was a Confederate veteran having served for 4 years in the C.S.A. in Company A of the 11th Battalion (Gordon's) Tennessee Cavalry. He married Mary K. Wilkes, daughter of Washington Lafayette Jefferson Wilkes and Jane Crockett Love. They had two daughters: Lela and Mary Cornelius "Neeley" Abernathy. He was a farmer and merchant in the Culleoka area of Maury County, Tennessee where he died on 7 Jul 1873. He was buried in the Wilkes-Campground Cemetery, near Culleoka.
