Son of Lyhugh Willis Allison (1808–1885) and Rebecca Bradley (1815–1860). James married twice. He first married Myra Jackson (1826-1861) in 1 January 1852 in Camden County, Missouri. He secondly married Frances Paralee Radford on 6 December 1853.
