SP4 Joseph Tatem Benton was a member of the Army, SP4 Benton served our country until February 18th, 1966 in South Vietnam. He was 22 years old and was not married. It was reported that Joseph died from small arms fire or grenade. His body was recovered. SP4 Benton is on panel 05E, line 044 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. He served our country for 2 years.
Joe is one of my best friends: I was near the day he was killed. Joe was a special guy who not only went to Viet-Nam, but went twice. I am proud to say he was my friend and because of his efforts and the loss of his life, I am able to live in a free country and lead a fee life. Thank you for your friendship Joe. Joseph Tatem Benton was originally buried in the family grounds on Woodland Church Road, but 5 years later his family have him moved to a spot in town, where more people would be able to find his grave easier. His father Kermit M. Benton is buried to his left, and his mother Lena Belle N. Benton is buried on his right. There is a large family Headstone that overlooks all three of their graves.
He was the Son of Mr and Mrs Kermit M Benton, Route 3, Hertford.
He served with Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment "Bobcats", 25th Infantry Division, "Tropic Lightning", USARV.
He was awarded The Combat Infantryman's Badge(CIB), The Bronze Star Medal with "V" Device for Valor in Action, The Purple Heart Medal for his combat related wounds, the Vietnam Service Medal, The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, The National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
