When he moved to United States, he attracted the attention of the House Un-American Activities Committee, but he did not testify and remains one of the few people to defy HUAC with impunity. He is remembered for his stark evocations of Spanish peasant life during a period of rapid and violent political change. His most celebrated novel was "The Olive Field." He was also Professor of Literature at New York University. Other of his books "Lean Men" and "The Fields of Paradise." He lived for a long time in Naxos (Greece).
