Oh John Pope, who had his "headquarters in his saddle". Ego does not make a proficient General.

You had a long career serving the United States and for your service I thank you. However, not all senior officers were meant to be battlefield commanders, as Generals Longstreet and Jackson proved the point.

General Pope, I give you credit for your 40+ years of service in the U.S. Army. You were an officer of promise after your performance at Island Number 10. Unfortunately, you were promoted far too rapidly, sent East to command an army, and you were expected to crush General Lee and his forces. It was not to be, and following your loss at Second Manassas, you were transferred back to the West to fight hostile Indians, which was considered a backwater for a career officer. Nevertheless you carried out your duties, and ultimately retired from the service as a Major General. You had your faults, and your treatment of General Fitz John Porter was totally unwarranted, but you were a dedicated and loyal Army officer. For that I give you credit

Thank you for your actions at Island No. 10. Also for putting down the Sioux Revolt of 1862. However, Second Manassas speaks for itself. And it was not Porter's fault. Lincoln's comment on your remark of where your headquarters were were typically on target.

Do you still have JEB's hat? We've got your coat, and dispatch box. John Paul Strain's painting "Lightening Over Catlett's Station" is absolutely superb....
