As part of Operation Enduring Freedom, Kerry was part of the U.S. mission to assist the Philippines against terrorists on the southern island of Basilan. Kerry was a member of the U.S. Army, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (S.O.A.R.), Airborne, known as the Night Stalkers.
Near the end of a long mission, with numerous take offs, landings, and mid-air refuelings, his MH-47E Chinook crashed into the sea off the coast of Apo Island, Philippines in the early morning hours of February 22, 2002 (local time).
Kerry is survived by his wife Carolyn and two young children.
Kerry is the youngest child of Paul and Martha Frith, and was killed on their 58th wedding anniversary(local time in the Philippines). Martha passed away less than five months after Kerry's death. Her cremated remains were buried at Arlington, in the grave next to Kerry on September 27, 2002, which was Kerry's 38th birthday. Paul Frith passed away in 2014 and is also inurned in the grave next to Kerry.
