The Navy Distinguished Service Medal is a military award of the United States Navy and United States Marine Corps which was first created in 1919. The Navy Distinguished Service Medal was originally senior to the Navy Cross, until August 1943 when the precedence of the two decorations was reversed. The Navy Distinguished Service Medal is bestowed upon members of the Navy or Marine Corps who distinguish themselves by exceptionally meritorious service to the United States government in a duty of great responsibility. Additional awards of the Navy Distinguished Service Medal are annotated by gold award stars. We the people, thank you for your service in defense of our freedom. R.I.P. Admiral Fletcher.

Admiral Fletcher commanded our aircraft carriers at the naval Battle of Midway June 4-7, 1942 in World War II. His keen leadership of naval air assets led to a fatal blow to the Japanese Navy's aircraft carriers by ambush, and sinking 4 of 4 in the battle. More importantly, the Japanese lost over one hundred trained pilots who were veterans of the Pearl Harbor attack, who could not be replaced. Thus, the battle changed the course of the war in the United States favor for the first time. U.S. Navy Motto Non Sibi Sed Patriae "Not self but country". We the people, thank you for your service. R.I.P. Admiral Fletcher.

The Purple Heart Medal of the U.S. Armed Forces is awarded to those who have been wounded or killed while serving on or after April 5, 1917 with the U.S. Military. All gave some, some gave all! We the people, thank you for your service, uncommon valor, and sacrifice. R.I.P. Sir.

The Navy Cross is the highest decoration that may be bestowed by the Department of the Navy and the second highest decoration given for valor. It is normally only awarded to members of the United States Navy, United States Marine Corps and United States Coast Guard, but can be awarded to all branches of United States military as well as members of foreign militaries. It was established by Act of Congress (Pub.L. 65-253) and approved on February 4, 1919. The Navy Cross is equivalent to the Distinguished Service Cross (Army) and the Air Force Cross. We the people, thank you for your valor in harms way, and defense of our freedom. R.I.P. Admiral Fletcher
