Son of a French officer; his mother was born in Round Island, Mississippi.

Lieutenant in the Crescent Regiment, Confederate Army, commanded by General Marshall J. Smith. Wounded at the Battle of Shiloh and taken prisoner. Escaped from Ft. Delaware by swimming across the mouth of the Delaware Bay. Made his way to New York, then to New Orleans, passing through Union lines. Became connected with the Transmississippi River Department under General Buckner. Detailed as a Secret Service Agent and delivered secret dispatches and orders. Wounded a second time on Red River. He returned to New Orleans at the close of the war.

Prominent member of the Southern Yacht Club, the Pickwick Club, and the Army of Tennessee.

Conducted business as a cotton factor under the name of H.A. Frederic.

Survived by his widow, Eugenie Gerard, a brother and two sisters.
