The daughter of Danish immigrants, Nellie grew up in Waterloo, Iowa, with her two brothers (Harry, Clarence and Bob) and two sisters (Fan, Minnie, Mabel). She married LOUIS FLIGER on Feb-5-1915 and shortly thereafter the couple moved to New Hampton, Iowa, where they opened Fliger Bakery.

They had seven sons--Louis, Russell, Alfred, Manley, Floyd, Herb, Roger--and then two daughters--Jeananne and Joan (who passed away as an infant).

As one of her many grandchildren, I remember fine times in their little home on the corner near the cemetery. Grandma was a wonderful cook and often prepared the fish, fowl, and other game brought home by her sportsmen husband and sons and produce from Grandpa's large garden. I was always fond of her fried river turtle.

Grandma always loved sharing photos and slides and it was always a treat for the grandchildren when she brought out the projector and screen after dinner to show the latest slides of her family and her journeys.

Since I didn't live in New Hampton, Grandma and I corresponded nearly to her passing. Her letters were warm and newsy and punctuated with her characteristic "Ha! Ha! Ha!"

Services at Conway Funeral Home, New Hampton, Iowa, on June 15, 1985 at 2:00 p.m. Rev. Vincent Staebell officiating. Pallbearers: Dan Fliger, Andy Fliger, John Fox, Lynn Fliger, Phil Fliger, Don Hereid.
