stories of Doc and Rey: Doc and Rey Lichte went to a New Year's Eve celebration one year in St. Louis sometime in the 1930s. They met an organ grinder with his monkey on a street corner. Doc immediately began to bargain with the organ grinder to purchase the organ AND the monkey. The organ grinder refused to sell the monkey, but Doc returned to Union with the hand organ. From this time on, Doc would celebrate the New Year, and other special times by bringing out that hand organ. He'd crank the handle, begin to sing, and it was not long before he was joined by family and neighbors all along Wally Avenue. -- When Doc and Rey purchased the old Hallingan mansion in 1936, known as the Martin Hotel and Summer Home, the house was demolished and the acreage divided into lots. Doc named the street where the mansion once stood Wally Avenue after the delightfully scandalous Wallis Warfield Simpson, the future wife of Edward the VIII. In later years, he would tell his daughter that if he'd known he was to be the father of Jane, he'd have named the street Jane. Such was tale of only one story he shared with the family!
