Ada Marie Kelley
We are gathered today In this Holy Place to pay Loving tribute to a physically departed sister In the brotherhood of man. You will note that I have used the expression “physically departed.” carefully abstaining from any inference that the fine character of this wonderful woman stopped with her heart. I think each of us readily recognizes and willfully admits that his life embracing, his physical, moral and spiritual wellbeing is Shaped by those with whom he is surrounded and with whom he shares the many activities of a busy and useful
Ada Marie Kelley touched and deeply affected the lives of each of us here today. Each life she touched was nurtured by the deep and abiding Christian Faith she imparted; each life blossomed under her unselfish devotion and personal attention In those around her; and each life so touched bore the greatest fruit man can ever hope to attain a heart filled with the Love of God and fellow man.
To understand more fairly the character of this fine person, It Is necessary review briefly the factors from whence It came.
Ada Marie Kelley was the product of upright, God fearing and God loving stock. Her forbears endured great hardship and traveled long before the turn of the century an they left the generally accepted comforts of on early day Eastern society to settle the raw rolling hills of Northern Missouri. There they carved a home in the wilderness one In which they were compelled to be self sufficient in body and In spirit. I have here In my hand the greatest tool those unpretentious, self-sacrificing ancestors of Mrs. Kelley carried west with them to the unbroken sod of Missouri. It is the Holy Bible of her family, which has been handed down from generation to generation as a priceless but not valuable heirloom. This was Mrs. Kelley's Book of guidance, and com fort throughout a busy and useful life. From the time of her birth on the farm she called the “Old Home Place” near Mercer this Holy Bible held a commanding place In her heart. The "Old Home Place" has long since been abandoned and has fallen in ruins, but the faith she obtained there endued and grew In stature until she fairly radiated the love of God in her associations with each of us with whom she came in contact.
Without this deeply ingrained faith, Ada Marie Kelley would not have been the happy person we all knew her to be. Hers was not an easy period of history in which to live.
Born on July 4th Independence Day in the year of our Lord 1901, Mrs. Kelley grew to maturity in troubled times. As a girl on the threshold of womanhood she saw her brothers march away to war, and she called on her faith in God when her brother, John, failed to return from that holocaust known as World War 1.
A short time thereafter on Dec. 20, 1919 she was married to a young man who had just returned from the battlefields of France, Olin Francis Kelley. To this happy union were born five children. They are Lowell Wayne, Francis Junior "Frank", Barbara Ann, Max Laverne and Jacqueline Marie "Jackie". But despite a happy home, the times were parlous. A great depression made the simple necessities of food, clothing and shelter difficult to obtain But through it all, this Holy Bible and her great faith in God sustained her and her family. And then came the great tragedy known as World War II and the sinking feeling she experienced a she saw her two older Sons pressed into the service of our country.
Again her faith comforted her and all those around her who were similarly affected by the ravages of war.
And then in recent years when normally she would have doted on her 12 grandchildren the heart she had so generously shared with her fellowman became weak and her physical wellbeing deteriorated. For seven long years she experienced the ravages of illness. But pain and personal discomfort failed to dim her happy spirit or dampen her generous attitude toward others. And with each passing year her simple, unquestioned faith in God emerged stronger and stronger as she tried desperately to maintain her customary unselfish way of life.
Each of us here today has, in one way or another, been the recipient of the goodness with which her heart was filled. And each of us is here today to bless her in our heart for having come into our life to make it richer in the true and unselfish spirit of God.
The earthly remains of Mrs. Kelley will be laid to eternal rest to day in these Missouri hills she knew and Loved as a child. We will sorely miss her physical presence among us. But we shall never miss her wonderful spirit, for it will continue to live among us so long as God is in His Kingdom of Heaven.
